Beautifully made for you.

Then I'll Have You

Then I'll Have You

The other night at 3am I found it hard to sleep due to the fact that another month was passing and it still wasn't our time. Luckily, it was the HBO free weekend, so I found the movie, Happy Feet. I figured it would be a great feel good movie to help me back to sleep, plus I love an animated movie.

The movie is full of life lessons and humor like all kid movies. One scene gave me a perspective I needed even if I didn't know I needed it.

The scene is where Gloria runs after Mumble and they talk about having eggs and their future...

GLORIA: Well, I don't need an egg to be happy

MUMBLE: You say that now, but what about later when all your friends have eggs?

GLORIA: Then I'll have you.

IN THOSE WORDS I COULD HEAR THE HUMOR, TRUTH, AND JOY OF OUR REALITY.

Our families begin with two people. Every family dynamic is different, but typically forms the same. The story of family as old as time, two people fell in love and they lived happily ever after. My happily ever after is very different than yours, but it started very similarly - with two people. Often times we forget our greatest gifts are the ones that are right in front of us every day. It seems surreal in the big picture that we have the opportunity to be so lucky to spend every day with this one person we chose to love. It is the one aspect of your family that you pick. You cannot pick your mother, your father, and you really can't even pick your children - but your husband, your wife they are hand picked specially by you.

My husband is my best friend, and when we chose each other we didn't choose each other because we knew we were the picture of fertility or because we knew we would never argue or disagree. We just chose each other because that is the forever we wanted. The talk of children has consumed us, and it is not really something we can shut the door on and revisit later. It is something we have to deal with together, overcome together, and fight for together.

At the end of the day and every day I feel like Gloria - that no matter what happens, I'll have him and that is all I need. It doesn't make it easier, it doesn't change my wants for our future, but I already have one of life's greatest gifts right in front of me. It is my promise, like it was on our wedding day, to always remember the gift I have in him and cherish him - especially in times of hardship.

 What is your greatest gift?
